4 Stars!

Firstly, I love the characters in this sequel and the first book. They're very fleshed-out and you don't get confused as to who is who, even though a lot of new people are introduced to the plot. That may sound trivial but I've read way too many books that should have character reference lists. Secondly, I think some reviewers might be missing the point on the progression of the main character's powers and assets. I don't think it's the male equivalent of a "Mary Sue" or author wish fulfillment. To me, it seems like a pretty good portrayal of the confusion someone would face upon rapidly obtaining god-like powers. For all of the supernatural elements, this feels more like a superhero origin story. And I like that bit of difference. Yes, he has a gorgeous, powerful Alpha girlfriend but, again, that fits with the origin story. Both the main character and his love interest are powerful and attractive because of their powers but the author is good at reminding us of the price they pay and the baggage they both carry. Some readers have also complained about the political plot elements but, again, it makes sense with what happens in the books. You can't give a character that much power without the government noticing and there being a fallout. It's always bugged me a little when authors put characters with extremely noticeable abilities in a present-day setting but they somehow remain completely hidden from military/police/etc. Final thoughts: Character building is excellent (I want to know more about everyone). Mythology is original (yes, there are vamps & werewolves, but his best friend is an extinct spirit bear). Looking forward to the next book in the series!
