5 STARS ! I love, love, love Kristen Ashley!
Sommersgate House was a most unhappy place indeed. And that didn’t even take into account the hauntings. Two lovers separated for eternity by a curse....
Their only hopes lies in the master of the house....
He must find true love....
Lord Douglas Ashton is a sexy, devilishly handsome, mysterious Englishman who, along with his sister, Tamsin, was raised in Sommersgate House by two sorry excuses of human beings. Needless to say, both Douglas and Tamsin never received any nurturing or caring from their parents in their upbringing. Douglas’ only example of love came from his sister who essentially loved him unconditionally and always supported him. Upon the death of his father, Douglas inherited Sommersgate House. So here we have a thirty-eight year old Baron who is a man of few words with a cool demeanour and composed emotions. When tragedy strikes and Tamsin and her husband, Gavin, are killed in a car accident, their three children are left in Douglas’ care at Sommersgate House. The only catch is that the responsibility of rearing the children is to be a shared venture with Gavin’s sister, Julia Fairfax. Julia Fairfax was absolutely devastated by the death of her brother and his wife. She had agreed to co-parent the children with Douglas in the past when she was approached by Gavin and Tamsin never thinking that a time would come where she would actually have to care for their children. Upon the tragic deaths of Gavin and Tamsin, Julia immediately quits her job and relocates to England from Indiana to live at Sommersgate House along with Douglas and the children. Julia is familiar with Sommersgate House as she had many times in the past been there on holidays. Julia now begins the difficult task of attempting to make a “home” for the children with her and Douglas at the dark and haunted mansion. Definitely a challenging feat especially with not only one, but two, ghosts who are quite annoying. Julia makes her way as the lady of the mansion and begins to care for the children while dealing with Douglas’ mother from hell. Douglas soon decides that he wants Julia as his wife. Yes, he simply decides that Julia will be his wife. When Douglas informs Julia of his decision to marry her, she rightfully refuses and proceeds to fight his many attempts to win her over. Julia was married previously to a man who she loved but ended up hurting her tremendously. She is in no rush to marry again and she will definitely never settle for anything but love. That is the one thing that Douglas is not offering her...his love. What both Julia and Douglas are unaware of is that only their love can bring about the lifting of the curse that is upon our two ghostie lovers. You remember, right? The annoying ghosts mentioned above. ;) This story was wonderfully heart-warming and there were quite a few scenes that had me tearing up or flat-out crying. This family has suffered a devastating loss and Julia and Douglas are left to pick up the pieces and provide the children with a loving home in hopes that their nieces and nephew can commence coping with the loss of their parents. I really loved how Douglas slowly warmed up to the children and eventually became a loving father figure. There were some tender and heart-wrenching scenes with the children. Seriously, KA is a master at writing touching moments like these. The love story between Douglas and Julia is slowly drawn out. It definitely does not happen overnight. Douglas has his work cut out for him in endeavoring to convince the lovely Julia that he could make her happy. The pair have known each other for fifteen years and there has always been a simmering attraction that was left unattended. When the two finally do come together you definitely have some sparks and fireworks. Would we expect anything less from KA? Absolutely not. Eventually, Julia and Douglas admit to the depth of their feelings and we are provided with an amazing HEA and a superb epilogue that we all know and love KA for. Once again, I am left wondering why I did not read this series sooner. I really need to smack myself. I am loving it and there should have never been any doubt on my part that it would be nothing less than awesome considering the author. I loved Sommersgate House and am very much looking forward to reading the next book. Some favourite quotes/lines: Dragging her to bed on her first night and seducing her while she was displaying symptoms of temporary insanity was most likely not the best way to welcome her to Sommersgate House. ** He wanted her. Yes, the problem of Julia was definitely becoming quite intriguing. ** “Good. Let the games begin,” she declared sarcastically. ** “You’re impossible,” she hissed in return. “And you’re adorable,” he replied instantly, his tone warm and teasing. Julia gaped because Douglas Ashton had just called her adorable. ** “Julia, I intend to be your lover.” With Julia’s soft warmth pressed so close, he could smell her. Both the feel of her and her scent made his body begin to tighten in an intensely pleasant way so that, when he spoke, his voice deepened, became hungry, as he, again, made his intentions clear but this time, he made them clearer. “I intend to sleep in sheets that smell of tangerines and jasmine. I intend to have your naked body squirming under mine. I intend to touch you everywhere with my hands and my mouth. I intend to memorise the taste of you, to make you call my name while I’m moving inside you, to make you so excited you beg me to let you come...” ** And what he wanted was for Julia to lose herself with him. He wanted this stubborn, tempestuous Julia Fairfax to disappear and an acquiescent, but still tempestuous, Julia Ashton to take her place. He wanted to brand her with his name and shackle her with his ring. ** She wasn’t innately damaged. She was destroyed. ** She wasn’t falling in love with Douglas Ashton. Julia was in love with him. In fact, there was a very good possibility she’d been in love with him for fifteen years. ** “If you ever leave,” his voice had changed from soft to harsh, “I’ll find you and bring you back.” ** “Bloody hell, he loved her.” ** He had not needed to put her back together. He had needed her to do it for him. ** “God, I love you.” ** “I didn’t want to spend my life not telling you how I feel. I love you, Douglas.” Then she tilted her head back, her throat arching and he lifted his head to watch in amazement as she shouted proudly, “Love you, love you, love you. I love Douglas Ashton!” ** “Douglas, Julia, thank you. We wish you...” Then they were fading, still embracing but slowly fading until they were completely out of sight. “...love.” It was a whisper and Douglas felt Julia’s tremble communicate itself through his body. ** "If I could," he whispered into her neck one dark night, "I'd have the world watch me make you mine."
