SPECIAL SCENE FROM ARCHER AND BREE
I lowered the visor in our new truck to block out the sunlight glinting off of the front windshield and then just sat there staring through the glass for another minute. My heart was pounding and I felt slightly dazed, but the joy that had started as a slow trickle was now beginning to course through my veins like a fast-moving river.
I turned my head and looked over at Archer who was leaned against the door just looking at me, a small smile on his face. As our eyes met, his smile grew and he cocked his head to the side, waiting for me to speak.
I brought my hands up. I should have known you’d do something just like this, over achiever, I said, narrowing my eyes playfully, my lips pursing into a mock frown.
Archer laughed, his white teeth flashing and his chest rising and falling silently. I moved across my seat so that I was right next to him and grinned up into his beautiful, happy face.
Two, I said simply and he nodded, his smile tender now.
Two, I repeated, putting one hand on my belly and glancing down.
Yup, Archer said, an unmistakable look of pride coming into his eyes. You said you wanted babies, he continued.
I laughed. I didn’t necessarily mean all at once, I said, but grinned at him and then wrapped my arms around his waist as he gathered me close. We just held each other for a minute, the joy blooming everywhere inside me now, making me feel energized and slightly giddy.
After a minute, I sat back and Archer signed, I’m going to be making lots of Almond Joy runs, aren’t I? His eyes danced with amusement and the corner of his lip quirked up.
I raised an eyebrow and he looked upward, as if considering. It’d probably be smartest just to start buying them in bulk right now.
I punched him lightly on his shoulder and he chuckled silently again. I bit my lip, going serious. It’s going to be a lot of work, I said, forcing myself to consider some of the reality of our situation. Twins! Two babies at once.
Archer and I had stared, wide-eyed at the monitor as the doctor pointed them out–just twenty minutes ago, but it still felt slightly unreal. Archer seemed to consider my words for a minute. He moved a piece of hair away from my face and then brought both hands together. We’ll figure it out, partner, he said, smiling a small smile at me. We always do.
I let out a breath and nodded. I know.
Plus, he continued, I have a feeling Anne and Maggie and Mandy are going to want a piece of these babies. He grinned again laying his own large hand on my abdomen.
I laughed. You’re right. We might even have to pry them away. I tilted my head and studied my handsome husband for a second and then leaned forward and kissed his lips, lingering there for a minute as he smiled against my mouth.
“Take me home, Archer,” I whispered, and that’s just what he did.
